About BASE Ireland
BASE Ireland is a farmer-led knowledge exchange network focused on Biodiversity, Agriculture, Soil and the Environment (BASE). We are part of a wider international BASE community of farmers who are committed to improving farming systems through shared learning and practical experience.
Our members farm across arable, livestock and mixed systems, and share a common interest in building healthier soils, stronger biodiversity and more resilient, profitable farms. With over 130 members, BASE Ireland brings together a wide range of farming experience from across Ireland.
At the core of BASE Ireland is a simple principle often used by our members: “farmers educating farmers.”
The primary objective of the organisation is the development of sustainable, farmer-led and profitable farming practices. BASE Ireland aims to empower members in their decision-making through the open sharing of techniques, on-farm learnings, information and ideas. Members are encouraged to host farm visits, take part in discussions, and openly share both successes and more importantly the challenges so that others can learn from real experience.
BASE Ireland focuses on understanding and working with natural processes — from soil biology and living roots to crops, livestock and the wider farm environment. Biodiversity is seen not as something separate from production, but as a key part of how productive farming systems function
What Makes BASE Ireland Different
- Run by farmers, for farmers, with learning driven by those working directly with the land
- Real on-farm experience, shared openly through discussion, farm walks, zooms and events
- A focus on principles rather than prescriptions, allowing members to adapt ideas to their own soils, systems and conditions
- A strong emphasis on peer-to-peer learning, curiosity and continuous improvement
We at BASE Ireland believe in “farmers educating farmers.”
